Prototype Nintendo PlayStation uncovered?

A rare prototype of the elusive Nintendo PlayStation may have been uncovered.

The console was originally part of a partnership between Sony and Nintendo to develop a CD based addon for the SNES. When the deal fell apart, Ken Kutaragi continued to work on the system which eventually became the PlayStation 1.

Now never before seeing pictures of the console that could have been have now appeared on the web.

Reddit user Dan Diebold, aka analogueboy and Dnldbld, claims that it belonged to his father.

“My dad worked for a company, apparently one of the guys he used to work with, I think his name was Olaf, used to work at Nintendo and when my dads company went bankrupt, my dad found it in a box of “junk” he was supposed to throw out,” he said in a forum post on on Assembler Games.

He could possibly be referring to Olaf Olaffson, then SEO of what would become Sony Computer Entertainment.

The system certainly looks legit with its yellowed plastic and Nintendo style cues. Some have questioned the console’s authenticity saying it appears to have an HDMI port on the back. However Analogueboy insists that it’s genuine, and has offered up a video as proof.

He plans to boot the system up as soon as he finds a compatible power adapter.

Only about 200 prototypes of the Nintendo PlayStation were made, and none have been seen in the wild. That would make this a holy grail of video game history.
