PlayStation 4 gets big day-one patch
All you PlayStation 4 fans mocking the Xbox One crowed for their day-one patch, guess what? The PS4 is going to get a sizable firmware update right at launch. Seems like it adds quite of few of the consoles sweetest features too, except for one major exception.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the update will add:
Remote Play
Allows PS4 games to be played on the Vita
Second screen
Allows the PS4 to work in conjunction with the iOS and Android mobile apps
-Multi-login
Allows a maximum of four different users accounts on a single PS4, which keeps games and trophies separate.
Broadcasting and spectating gameplay
Stream your games, or watch other people’s games
Play as you download
Play a game before it finishes fully downloading. Initial download wait time will vary depending on the title.
Party chat
Voice chat with up to eight of your friends using a headset. Also allows PS4 owners to chat with Vita owners.
Face Recognition and Voice Commands
PS4 can remember your face and allows you to log in to your account using the PlayStation eye camera. You can also now use voice commands to navigate the menus as you would on the Xbox One.
Background Music Player
Play your games while listening to Sony’s Music Unlimited. They did not specify whether or not this works for locally stored music as well.
Online Multiplayer
PlayStation Plus not required for online multiplayer
Bluray and DVD support
Users must log in on first use to activate DVD and Bluray support.
It’s a bit of a mystery to us why these critical features were not already built in to the launch consoles. Firmware 1.5 will clock in at about 300MB.
Conspicuously missing is the touted ability to be able to suspend/resume your games. This allowed you to put the system to sleep then pick up your game exactly where you left off. Sony says this feature will not be included at launch but gave no reason why. Nor did they provide any hits as to when it would be added. We’ll follow up with this whenever Sony gives out more information.
