Editorial: Why does Nintendo get a free pass?

The Wii U is about to get a bit more affordable, though whether it will have games is a different story. During their 2DS unveiling, Nintendo announced that it will give the Wii U a $50 price cut. The price of the 32GB Deluxe model has been reduced from $349.99 to $299.99.
The cut comes to us as no surprise. The Wii U has been struggling to gain acceptance from gamers. Only 3.6 million consoles have been sold since launch according to Nintendo. This falls far short of the Wii’s incredible success out of the gate. With the PS4 retailing for $399. it made the higher prices very difficult to justify.
While the lower price makes the Wii U more tempting, it still lacks games. Third parties have been shying away from the system, and Nintendo seems slow to develop original first party titles. This might encourage fence sitters but Nintendo still has to get their software cards in order.
