The problem with automated copyright flagging systems: they’re ripe for abuse. Exhibit A: Avtivision is allegedly threatening YouTubers who are posting glitch videos from Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
ArsTechnica reports that Machinima is warning their content creators to be mindful about what they’re posting.
A notice sent out to YouTubers last Friday states that “Activision is being particularly vigilant about their Call of Duty videos lately, issuing strikes on videos showing glitches… please be careful.”
If Activision is using YouTube’s ContentID to flag potentially embarrassing content, that’s a new low. It also violates rule number one of good PR. Never blame your customer for your own stupid mistake.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is one of several blockbuster titles to ship this Fall with game breaking bugs. Almost every major publisher has come under fire for the practice in recent months. It’s long been a problem, but it only seems to be getting worse this generation.
